The Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) is an off-road paved bike and pedestrian trail currently spanning between the towns of Yarmouth to Wellfleet, with inter-connecting trails throughout. Through regional efforts, construction has commenced to extend the existing trail within Yarmouth to Mary Dunn Road in Barnstable (Phase 3), with an estimated completion date in 2031. In addition, the Town of Barnstable is continuing to design the next trail segment from Mary Dunn Road to Route 132; subsequent segments will ultimately extend the trail to the Barnstable/Sandwich town line (Phase 4).
Pre-construction activities commenced in 2024, and construction is anticipated to commence Spring 2025. This phase of the project will extend the CCRT from Old Town House Road in Yarmouth to Mary Dunn Road in Barnstable, a distance of approximately 4 miles, as shown in the map below. The Barnstable section of the CCRT will be entirely within the Hyannis Ponds Wildlife Management Area, as shown in the map below. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2031.
MassDOT held a virtual public meeting on October 9, 2020 to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Phase 3 project. To view the MassDOT public hearing recording, please click here to visit Mass.gov.

Based on an engineering study and public input, the Phase 4 trail route is proposed to extend from Mary Dunn Road to the Barnstable/Sandwich town line, a distance of approximately 10 miles, as shown in the map below. This will involve some trail sections alongside roads, and other sections further offset from roads, so trail users will have opportunities to travel through natural areas where feasible. This project has been in preliminary engineering for several years, most recently completing major land surveying and draft concept plans. Last year the Town of Barnstable received an additional MassTrails grant to perform the next stages of preliminary design. A construction timeframe has not been determined yet for this phase. Funding for this project to date has been provided by Community Preservation Act funds and MassTrails grants.
